About QJTA

The Queer Jewish Theatre Archive is a celebration.

The first of its kind, the QJTA is a born-digital community archive that focuses on queer Jewish theatre and the talented people behind it. The QJTA’s aim is to acknowledge the intersectionality of the three communities represented. We believe that Judaism and gay culture are intrinsically tied together with theatre and to ignore one or both parts would be to dilute their combined power, telling an incomplete story of theatre and its history.

The QJTA is designed to be a resource for fans of theatre and academics alike, a place where people can gather, deposit, and appreciate queer Jewish theatre.

The QJTA recognizes that a large majority of its content is centred around white cisgender men based in New York City. In the 20th century, when contemporary Western theatre was being created, white cisgender men were the most successful theatre makers. We understand that that is not the makeup of queer Jews around the globe and discourage any assumptions of that kind. Both queerness and Judaism exist on a spectrum and no one individual is less or more of a queer Jew than another. It is our hope that through collaboration, the QJTA will become a more diverse and accurate representation.

The QJTA hopes to reveal the magic in queer Jewish theatre.
